Selection of Managers and Coaches
There
are a number of basic policies which must be understood and accepted by all
persons applying to be a manager or coach in Little League.
·
All Manager, Coach
and Umpire positions are volunteer positions.
It is the commitment of volunteers that help make each Little League
season a success.
·
Each Little
League divison and level has a Vice President and/or Player Agent that gathers
names of Managerial and Coaching candidates and presents the names to the
League President.
·
The League President
appoints all Managers and Coaches.
Managers, Coaches and Umpires-in-Charge are directly responsible to the
League President.
·
All Manager and
Coach candidates must be approved by a Washington State Patrol background check
in order to work with our children.
What does Woodinville Little League look for in a coach? Here is a checklist of qualities that are
important:
Knowledge and Teaching Skills
·
Does the manager
know the rules and techniques of baseball/softball? Can he/she communicate these to players?
·
Does he/she
demonstrate how to perform and give clear explanations?
·
Are practices and
games well organized, safe, and fun for the players?
·
Is instruction
matched to the age and knowledge level of the children?
Motives and Philosophy
·
Does the coach
seem to have a sincere interest in children and their Little League experience.
·
Does he/she put
winning and losing in perspective? Is
the focus where it should be — on fun, learning, and participation for all?
·
Does the manager
teach values as well as skills?
·
Can he/she
communicate his/her coaching philosophy to athletes and parents?
Past Experience with this Manager or Coach
·
How was the
manager’s attendance for practices and games? Was he/she on time?
·
Did the coach
ever engage in any inappropriate behavior, such as cursing or hazing of
officials or opponents?
·
Was the manager evenhanded with all players, even
his/her own child, or was there an imbalance of playing time, positions, and
attention for players.
·
Were the players
and parents generally happy with their coach? Do they want to return to him/her
or do they want a new manager?
·
How long has this
individual managed or coached for Woodinville Little League?
The Woodinville Little League Board of Directors recognizes
that the league has a responsibility to prepare all managers and coaches for
their leadership role. The league offers
coaching clinics and expects that all managers and coaches attend the required
sessions each season. Additionally,
the board will provide guidelines for the fundamental skills that should be
taught, understood and demonstrated by the players at each level.
The WLL Board appreciates your willingness to volunteer. You
will be notified by the WLL President if you are appointed to a team.
